EXPRA

Expra

EXPRA (Extended producer responsibility alliance), which was founded in 2013. EXPRA is an umbrella organization for packaging and packaging waste recovery and recycling systems which are owned by obliged industry and work on a not-for-profit basis. EXPRA acts as the authoritative voice and common policy platform representing the interests of all its member packaging recovery and recycling organisations founded and run by or on behalf of obliged industry.

Members of EXPRA are national organisations for the collection and sorting of waste, established and operated by liable industrial companies especially in Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Luxemburg, Malta, Romania, the Slovak Republic, and Spain.

The EXPRA member alliance was created in Europe as a direct response to the European Directive on packaging and packaging waste from 1994. This directive requires EU Member States, for the purpose of the collection, sorting and recycling of packaging waste, to create “systems” with the participation of industrial companies. This Directive also applied in EEC member countries, as well as all countries that acceded to the EC. In most of these countries, the Directive was implemented via systems of manufacturer responsibility, created with the objective of assuming responsibility for the collection and sorting of packaging waste for the entire sector of the industry.

The primary task of EXPRA members is to ensure, in individual states, the effective implementation of appropriate national systems for collection and sorting /of waste/, especially in the areas of packaging for businesses and households. In this way, industrial enterprises and companies fulfil their own obligation to take back used sales packaging. The goal is to ensure that the collection, sorting and recycling of waste are carried out in the most economical and environmentally-friendly manner.

PRO EUROPE  (Packaging recovery organisation Europe), founded in 1995, is the umbrella organisation for European packaging and packaging waste recovery and recycling schemes which mainly use the “Green Dot” trademark as a financing symbol. In its primary role, PRO EUROPE is the general licensor of the “Green Dot” trademark.

The “Green Dot” has evolved into a proven concept in many countries as implementation of Producer Responsibility. Industry in twenty-eight nations is now using the “Green Dot” as the financing symbol for the organisation of recovery, sorting and recycling of sales packaging.
